Solo Practitioner Finds Peace of Mind - Real Results
Challenge
Starting a new business can be very rewarding but it also comes with challenges. In 1998, Dr. Gabis was anxious to launch his new practice and did not want to waste valuable time. As with any new business attempting to find real solutions for his practice management needs was of utmost importance and he realized the use of professional services would be essential to the success of his business. SMMR realized it was necessary to tailor a valuable practice management program in order to meet the specific needs of his practice.
Solution
Dedicated to meet the growing needs of physician practices, Sheakley Medical Management Resources provided a full set of solutions affording knowledge and expertise to ensure Dr. Gabis’ practice would operate efficiently. An Account Manager was immediately assigned as it was critical the Account Manager oversee all support functions, the daily processes and maintain ongoing communication with Dr. Gabis.
SMMR delivered a practice management program which positioned his business to exceed medical group management standards year after year. SMMR provided functions for:
n Patient Registration
n Charge Entry
n Receipt Entry
n Insurance Follow-Up
n Collection Efforts
Results
Over the last 10 years, SMMR has enjoyed watching the evolution and progress of Dr. Gabis’ practice grow from a single practitioner to two practitioners and three social workers. As time went by Dr. Gabis entrusted our recommendations to obtain a lockbox through Fifth Third Bank and additionally enabled our credentialing department to take over the duties of monitoring his daily charges and lockbox receipts.
Today his practice continually exceeds MGMA Standards in each area of days in A/R and A/R over 120 days. Everything is under control and every aspect covered.
“As a psychologist, I have been using SMMR as a billing service since I started my practice 10 years ago. Sheakley has provided very personal, professional, efficient, and timely service in my efforts to maintain one of the best billing and collection rates among my peers. SMMR’s fee schedules are among the lowest of all the companies that I considered, and I would recommend their services to any professional who is starting or looking for better service to enhance their billing and collection.”
Jerome A. Gabis, PsyD

Effective A/R Management Boosts Revenue for Solo Practitioner
Challenge
This physician needed a solution and quick. While the doctor was on vacation, the office manager quit unexpectedly and left the practice with no one to handle day to day responsibility of their medical billing and accounts receivables. This client needed someone who could immediately take charge and assume all functions of the medical billing and collections process. The A/R over 120 days was over 30% and many older accounts were in need of appeals to insurance companies. This practice not only needed immediate support but also someone who was skilled on the Misys System. The solution needed to be quick as research needed to be done on patient balances and payment for older delinquent balances needed aggressive action.
Objective
n Respond Immediately
n Effectively organize medical billing and A/R
n Identify all outstanding insurance accounts
n Ensure a timely flow of payments back to the practice
Solution
As a local Misys expert, Sheakley Medical Management Resources (SMMR) assumed all functions required and stepped in with AAPC certified coders to support the practice’s CPT and ICD-9 coding needs. We were able to immediately see the state of the practice and determine areas of greatest need. Within the first 30 days SMMR made the required changes necessary to ensure the effectiveness of our program and provide results from our efforts. After running a report to identify all outstanding insurance accounts we researched problems and refiled claims, appealed denials, called on overdue accounts setting up monthly bill resolution and performed pre-collection activities.
Results
Within 30 days of service excellence positive results were being received. Successful day to day operation of charge audits and receipt posting occurred. Monies that were over a year old began to trickle in. Within 90 days of taking over the billing duties and for the first time in the history of this practice the A/R was below 10%.
