In an emergency, keeping your employees and customers safe is priority one.

With more than two million US workers reporting incidents of workplace violence and 7 deadly active shooter incidents in the workplace in the last 28 months, the tools to prevent and address these disasters in real time have never been more valuable. Nothing is more important than the safety and well-being of your employees. This June, Sheakley will partner with Safeguard Risk Solutions to offer three active shooter and workplace violence training courses for you and your staff.

Safeguard Risk Solutions

With more than 30 years’ experience as a police officer, educator, and expert on emergency preparedness, Gary Sigrist founded Safeguard Risk Solutions in 2013. Safeguard Risk Solutions is an industry leader in providing training and assessments to ensure liability reduction, safety, and security for employers, employees, and customers.

Sigrist obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education from Ohio University, then went on to pursue a Master of Science degree in education administration from the University of Dayton. Additionally, Gary completed Ohio Peace Officers Basic Training through the Central Ohio Peace Officer’s Training Academy. Sigrist has obtained specialized training in school violence threat assessment, terrorism and WMD in the workplace, and active shooter situations, in addition to many others.

Sheakley workplace violence and active shooter strategy resources

Sheakley offers onsite consulting and program set-up for workplace violence and active shooter response strategies. Sheakley’s safety experts will work with you and your staff to develop a clear policy and action plan in the event of an incident.

In addition, Sheakley will provide workplace violence and active shooter response training for all members of your staff. Annual trainings will ensure that any new staff members are prepared for potential situations as well. Sheakley safety experts work with you and your staff to develop preventative measures to reduce the likelihood of workplace violence incidents as well. These include: trainings to ensure that your managers are aware of the warning signs of potential violence; skills training for how to address these warning signs; assessing the appropriate security measures that your company should implement; and conducting drills to ensure that your staff is prepared to deal with an active situation.

Sheakley’s workplace violence and active shooter response trainings teach the Avoid, Deny, Defend (ADD) strategy of civilian response. The ADD strategy was developed by Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) in 2004 and is the recognized standard for civilian response to violent incidents.

• AVOID: Have an agreed upon escape plan. Try to move away from threat as soon as possible.
• DENY: Create additional distance and barriers between you and the threat. Turn off lights, stay quiet, and hide.
• DEFEND: If unable to escape or hide from the threat, it is okay to defend yourself. Be aggressive as possible against the threat, and don’t be afraid to yell.

When safe to do so, call 911 to report the incident. This may occur at the beginning of the attack, in the middle, or after it is over. Remember, the sooner emergency responders are notified, the sooner they can respond.

Active shooter course topics

In an active shooter situation, it is important to be equipped to act immediately, limit injuries, and preserve as many lives as possible. Sheakley’s Active Shooter training course provides you with tactics, guidance and a proven plan of action in an active shooter event.

Classes will be offered on June 13, June 20, and June 26. Lasting three hours, the course topics covered include:

• History of Active Shooter Events
• Civilian Response Options
• Medical Issues
• Active Shooter Drills
• Workplace Violence and Prevention Strategies

Gary Sigrist will lead the training and Sheakley safety team experts will be on-hand to answer any questions you may have about developing workplace violence policies and plans for your business.

The best response is a good plan

Workplace violence can occur in any business, at any time. While taking preventative measures, like fostering a respectful workplace and taking action when or if warning signs arise, can reduce the risk of an incident occurring at your business, it is always advised to be prepared for the worst-case scenario and have a solid plan of action. Help protect your business, employees and customers by joining us in June for an Active Shooter course. Register today for Active Shooter training.
